Sidney Herbert Webb was born in Bassingbourn (Chesterton Q 1864 3B:), baptised in Great Shelford on 14th October 1866, son of James and Sarah Ann WEBB (née BOVINGDON ?).
1871 census...Aged 6, he was at High Street, Great Shelford with his father James WEBB [35] policeman born Moulton, Suffolk; his mother Sarah [34] born Bassingbourn; brothers Clarence [10] born Bassingbourn and William [1] born Great Shelford and sister Jeannette [2] born Great Shelford. 1881 census...Aged 16, a baker's assistant, he was at High Street, Balsham with his parents; sister Jeannette and brothers William John [11], Ernest [9] and James [7] the two new boys were born in Great Shelford. In 1888 he married Martha Amelia LIVERMORE [qtr 3-1888 Cambridge 3b:806) 1891 census...Aged 26, a baker, he was at Mill Lane, Fordham with his wife Martha [25] born Snailwell and their son Syril [8 months] born Fordham. Also there was a visitor Ellen Livermore [27] born Snailwell, his sister in law. 1901 census...Aged 36, a baker/confectioner, he was at Mill Lane, Fordham with his wife Martha Amelia, son Syril, daughter May Rose Gladys[9]; sons Victor Charles [8],Sidney James [7], William Stanley [6], Richard Montague [4], Percy Augustus [3], Reginald Norman [1] and Hector Baden [10 months]. All the children were born in Fordham. 1911 census...Aged 46, confectioner, he was at Market Street, Fordham with his wife; daughters May and Ruby [8]; sons Cyril (nurseryman), Victor (confectioner), Sidney (nurseryman), William (grocer's boy), Percy, Reginald, Hector, Thomas [9], Archibald [6], Clement [5] and Eric [4]. All the new children were also born in Fordham. All fourteen children still survived. Most of the children too old for consideraton for pension, but in any event that particular card was destroyed. |

He enlisted on 5th October 1915 and was discharged through illness on 3rd April 1918, awarded Silver War Badge No.375900. There seems to be a discrepancy
regarding dates as the silver war badge documentation gives his enlistment as on 5th October 1915 and yet his medal index card has him in Egypt by the 24th October?
His Army records have not been found but local archivist Horace Hunt says it was the flu pandemic that caused his death. He is certainly one of the oldest local servicemen found on a memorial.
